THE GOOD, BAD and THE UGLY

Happy New Year, what is your new years resolution?  The most common one is weight loss. Statistics show that only 10% of these resolutions will be carried through. I believe the issue of losing weight is difficult for most people for two reasons. First of all there are lots of misinformation about how to do it, making it more complicated then it needs to be. Secondly, but probably more importantly, their willpower is no match against the powerful biological drives called hunger and cravings. The how to loss weight is the easy part, it is the “stuff” that comes up during the process that causes people to fail.

To ever have a chance of successfully losing weight you must understand the effect carbohydrates have on your serotonin and blood sugar levels.  Have you noticed that when upset or anxious you desire sugary and/or starchy carbohydrate foods? This happens because carbohydrates create a serotonin boost that calms, tranquilizes and satisfies.  After you eat a carbohydrate rich meal blood sugar levels raise sharply which cases insulin and serotonin to also rise. Because of the effects of serotonin these carbohydrate meals become your comfort foods and rescue you from feeling your hunger or rather your lack of satisfaction. This by the way is not real hunger simply from lack of food, but rather a deep biological need culminated from displaced and unresolved emotional, mental, physical and chemical influences. This is the place most people jump out of the game and go back to their old and comfortable eating habits. The ones that stay with the process go a little deeper inside themselves and experience more of who they are and get rid of who they aren’t. This is called healing.  When the serotonin level drops your hormones activate hunger for another carbohydrate rich meal and before too long a roller coaster relationship develops between blood sugar, insulin and serotonin. Over time you will begin to notice that your feel good response from these carbohydrates are wearing off faster and faster leaving you drowsy, lethargic and unfocused. Your hormones are out of balance and have lost their ability to effectively control blood sugar levels allowing it to be either too high or too low.

Clinical symptoms typical to this situation are fatigue, overweight, underweight, hypoglycemia, diabetes, anxiety, depression, mood swings, cardiovascular disease, premature aging and much more. These people crave sugar and need coffee, tea, cola or chocolate to get through the day. They cope with life's challenges with the help of anti-depressants, alcohol or nicotine. This is where addictive eating patterns get formed that continually undermines this person’s health and any motivation to change it. Losing weight is not a possibility for this person. They have an addiction but it goes unnoticed because our culture has made it politically correct to place a Starbucks on every corner and give out feel good drugs rather than take responsibility for one’s lifestyle.

When considering the how to part there are only three categories to work with here: fat, carbohydrate and protein. Just think of the movie "The Good, Bad and the Ugly." Learn the relationship between these players and you will have the mystery of how to loss weight solved. First off fat is the good guy; it is the primary fuel of the body. Once you break your body’s dependency on sugar for fuel, fat will automatically regain it’s rightful role as your primary fuel source. You will discover the power of fat.  It can deliver more energy than protein and sugar combined. If you are a fat burner.... well...you burn fat, feel better, look better and will have the freedom to choice a different new years resolution. Also fat will help you to reduce the hunger and cravings. Fat is our friend.

I hope by now you have figured out that carbohydrate is the bad guy. Have you noticed that there are essential amino acids and essential fats but no essential carbohydrates? This is because the carbohydrate food group is not required to sustain life. It is a myth to say you need carbohydrate for energy. Except of course if you are a sugar burner, then you are dependent on them.

Finally we have the protein food group. Everyone needs protein in his or her diet, this is not good or bad it just is. We can argue about how much and what type but here is a simple guideline to get you at least 80% there. Stay with 3 to 5 ounces per meal at least 3 times a day and try to use an organic source as much as possible. Don't sweat the details with protein; leave the sweating for the exercise. Why do I call it the ugly? Next time you view your culinary cuisine take notice as to what is the least aesthetic food group, the meat. If that is not enough then consider the slaughterhouses that beast visited prior to its very last experience. Not a pretty site.
