Everyone has probably known somebody who smoked, ate and drank anything and everything, with no regard to whether it was healthy or not, and still lived relatively free of serious illness well into old age. They appear to not be bound to the statistical norms regarding the relationship between lifestyle, health, and disease. What would you say about this person that best explains their unique enduring health? Choose the most appropriate statement below.
A. This lucky person was born with good genetics, providing them with a strong constitution.
B. This person has a high level of resistance because they take really good care of themselves.
C. This person has a balanced metabolism, therefore their body responds appropriately to stress.
D. This person is lucky.
E. All the above due to A.
F. All the above due to B.
G. All the above due to C.
H. All the above due to D.
Here is a hint. You can rule out B because we know by admission this person does not take care of themselves, and by default that also eliminates F. Now we need to ask, do you believe in luck? If no, then you can rule out D and H. You can also eliminate A because that statement described this individual as lucky, and luck does not exists, and this also knocks E out of the race leaving only C and G. But wait, we have a technicality, all the “all the above” answers get eliminated when luck is eliminated because D is included in “all the above” answers. So if you do not believe in luck, then by default you are left with only C. But this answer conjures another question, how can someone who eats badly and indulges in unhealthy habits, have a balanced metabolism? The answer: only if they are lucky enough to have good genetics.
Now if you believe in luck, what would be the most appropriate statement? By using the same logic, you can quickly eliminate all your choices down to A, C, and D. But if we had to choose only one, I would go with D. The reason, Occam’s razor. This definition is taken out of Wikipedia, “Occam's razor is the problem-solving principle that the simplest solution tends to be the right one. When presented with competing hypotheses to solve a problem, one should select the solution with the fewest assumptions.” This person is just plain lucky, is the simplest solution with the fewest assumptions.
Do you feel lucky? Lucky enough to avoid the negative health consequences associated with an unhealthy lifestyle? If you do, then party on. And while we are in the land of unicorns, are you waiting for medical science to capture that magical healing force in a pill? It sounds silly, but that hype is too often promoted by pharmaceutical and nutraceutical suppliers.
I believe in luck, and I feel lucky. I also believe that luck is not by chance. It is a vibrational force, cultivated with proper internal and external alignment with nature. Fostered by a culmination of spirituality, positive thinking, healthy lifestyle, surrounding yourself with positive influences, etc. Not too unlike a seed cultivated with good soil, sunlight, and water to produce a healthy vibrant vegetable or fruit. Yes, good genetics is a factor too...do you eat GMO foods?
Even though I feel lucky, I am not going to depend on that to provide me good health. My health (and yours) is too important to rely on luck, especially when we know how to support it. Stop guessing and grasping and hoping you will get lucky the next time you grab a vitamin supplement in a store or order on line. That goes for OTC and prescriptions drugs too. There is a better way. Take the mystery out of your choices and chance out of the outcome. Get metabolically tested and find out exactly what your biochemistry needs to thrive. Get adjusted too; remember, our nervous system orchestrates everything.
Back to our riddle. The best answer to the riddle is A, C, and D. Apparently this person was lucky enough to be born with good genetics, a strong constitution, and the mysterious ability to maintain a balanced metabolism that provides a high degree of adaptability to stress. And of course they are very lucky to have all these benefits and still party like a rock star.
